Squiggly Line Landscape Part1 by TomatoDragon Squiggly Line Landscape Part1 by TomatoDragon
One of my most favorite things to draw are landscapes. I've knows a lot of people who seem overwhelmed at the thought of drawing one, but they can actually be quite simple. Here's one that I started, and I'll post the finished version when done. Nice trick to show some depth in landscapes, is to make objects lighter and the lines thinner as you get further away, to simulate more atmosphere between the view and the scene.

this is great. your advice is really helpful, landscapes ARE overwhelming, and this tidbit really helps. so...do you draw it out and then add the different shades on the computer?

This just works really well. I fell a lone figure should be in the background walking into the sunrise...but thats just me!

I know what you mean - up until recently the thought of landscapes sent me into convulsions of fear. They're not like drawing people at all...you know, a place for everything and everything in its place. It's actually...simpler. Getting the texture is the challenge for me though.

You did great simulating a variety of foliag with just a few squiggly lines.

Yep...I totally hear what you are saying. I found that the simplier I got with land...the easier and better it looked.

Make a tutorial! XD

Cause I suck at landscapes/backgrounds, and until you make a tut I'm going to leave all my pics with white backgrounds! :O

Just kidding, but you should really make a tutorial for landscapes. ;)

I find that you can go into two bad areas with'em.

One is where you make it too organized and the scene starts to look like the cogs on a wheel or the teeth of a chainsaw.
The other is where the stuff is so uneven there is no balance at all, like looking at a junkyard instead of a cemetary.

I forget the issue, but when one of the Kuberts was doing the Hulk in the late 90s, there was an issue that spent some time in the Hulk's head or something, and the scene was an infinite graveyard.
I thought that was one of the best laid out graveyards ever. The gravestones could have been better and such, but the layout, I thought, was awesome. Enough spacing and balance to make it work in the story.
